Organizing: Spices2 Comments

Since we are hoping to own our first home very soon, I have decided to get myself organized for my new kitchen. A few weeks ago I made this Peach Ginger Tart, when it took me about ten minutes to find the ginger in my spice cabinet , I knew something needed to change. The first place I went to look was Pinterest. Even though I am not officially a member, I am trying to hold out as long as possible before getting on another time sucker, I am able to search for different ideas. I typed in organizing spices, and found tons of great ideas, but this idea was my favorite.

Spices before aka nightmare

I immediately searched Etsy and Ebay to find some reasonably priced baby food jars. Unfortunately, Blair and I are not quite at that stage in our lives yet. I found some on Ebay and waited patiently for them to be delivered. I went to my local Home Depot and bought some chalkboard paint, and spent part of one weekend painting the lids. Once they were dry, I went to work cleaning out my spice cabinet. It was a great thing to do since some of my spices had been expired for quite some time. After I dumped each one in its new home, I labeled it with chalk. In the house, I plan to store them in a drawer, and alphabetize them. No more digging for me! How do you organize your spices? Have I inspired you to try this at home?

PS I promise to take pictures of them in a drawer once we are settled in (fingers crossed)

What you’ll need:
glass baby food jars with lids (I used 4 oz. jars)
another idea for jars here and here
chalkboard paint
paint brush
funnel (optional)

What you’ll do:
Make sure your jars are sterilized and that the labels are completely off. Remove all the lids from the jars and set down some newspaper for your work space. With a small paintbrush, paint each individual lid and allow to dry. Repeat with a second jar and allow to dry completely. I waiting about a half hour in between the first and second coats. Using chalk, label the lid with the corresponding spice. A funnel makes the job of transferring a little bit easier. Enjoy a nice organized spice drawer!
